How to Install a TED 1001 :
Unlike other products such as the WattsUp, WattsUp Pro, Power Cost Monitor, the TED 1001 is installed at the main electricity panel. Therefore it must be installed by a qualified electrician. The diagram below shows exactly how this setup works.
- Since the TED 1001 measures power at the electrical panel, it must be installed by a qualified electrician.
- TED Model 1001 is only suitable for use on 120/240V single-phase 60HZ services
- TED Model 1001 is only suitable for services of 200 AMPS or less.
- TED Model 1001 is only suitable for use with services with a single service disconnect
- TED Model 1001 is only suitable for services with maximum 350 MCM Conductors
- TED Model 1001 RDU is only approved for use with the following TED accessories:
- TED Model 1001 MTU (Measuring Transmitting Unit)
- TED Model QX 200-CT (Current Transformers)Use with any other product will void warranty, and may cause an electrical or fire hazard

The Good:
This energy monitor is easy to install and easy to use. We have been using this energy monitor to monitor a communal pool for almost 3 years. It appears to be very accurate and is well worth the money.
The Bad:
There is no battery backup to save the history and energy usage in a power outage. Everything reverts back to 0.
The Bottom Line:
Overall, it's a very good investment. We just bought another one to monitor our well pump. It's a great way to monitor the condition of equipment and when equipment may need to be serviced or maintained.

The Good:
the product works great, easily installed. I easily found and energy drain that i was having problems locating before. so I was quite happy with it..
The Bad:
one particular problem I have with mine. and I wrote the manufacture about it. is that it acts a bit weird if you have transformers plugged in (UPS, chargers and low voltage adapters) the unit will stall and for me it happen in odd numbers if I have 3 or 5 device plugged in on the same circuit as TED it stalls but 1,2 or 4 it works properly.

overall it is a very nice product. even though it can be a bit quirky under certain conditions

Makes power calculation based on neutral to one line only. This limits the accuracy. Transmitts data through the power wires that are on the same line as the voltage measurement. This can result in the display unit ending up plugged into an inconvenient receptacle Does not retain daily summary information only month to date.
The Bottom Line:
Overall very useful for what I bought it for, to determine powerconsumption of some big load devices, such as a outdoor hot tub.

install was a little tricky for a non-standard install. Bright green LED does flash constantly, not a big problem unless located in a non-conspicuous place.

Definitely good deal. Typical install is pretty straight forward if you are familiar with electrical work. Display is easy to use, and shows a lot of good information.

The communications interface doesn't work if you have a surge protector. (How many people that own computers don't use a surge protector?) The USB port on the side was not thought out well.

Needs more work with the interface and communications. The USB port is clumsy A good idea that is not really finished. Needs remote monitoring capabilities.

The Good:
The price and functionality of this device are plus points. It was very easy to install and does a good job of monitoring. The sensitivity is really good, down to about 10W. It is easy to tell if something has just turned on, and to give a clear monitor of connected load.
The Bad:
I have had some problem with my computer going to blue screen, particularly if I leave the Viewer up. Now I leave it off, unless I am using it. I just updated the Footprints software to ver. 1.3.5.0. So far I have not had any more blue screens, but it has only been a few days. A date/time window for viewing the graphs would be nice.
The Bottom Line:
This is a very functional device and I would recommend it. The only downsides are software bugs, but can be worked around so far. I did have the base meter lock up once, and had to cycle power to the sending unit to reset it.
The price and functionality of this device are plus points. It was very easy to install and does a good job of monitoring. The sensitivity is really good, down to about 10W. It is easy to tell if something has just turned on, and to give a clear monitor of connected load.
The Bad:
I have had some problem with my computer going to blue screen, particularly if I leave the Viewer up. Now I leave it off, unless I am using it. I just updated the Footprints software to ver. 1.3.5.0. So far I have not had any more blue screens, but it has only been a few days. A date/time window for viewing the graphs would be nice.
The Bottom Line:
This is a very functional device and I would recommend it. The only downsides are software bugs, but can be worked around so far. I did have the base meter lock up once, and had to cycle power to the sending unit to reset it.

Excellent product. Easy to set up and operate.

Limited range on the signal. I had to locate the receiving unit within 30 feet or so of the transmitting unit (at the main breaker). Also, the flashing green light on the receiving unit can be a little anoying at night (little tape over the light fixes the problem).

Works really well, no glitches. 64 bit software could be a bit stronger.

Well, the current model [no pun intended] only measures the absolute value of the power, so if you have net metering (solar), it will not read correctly in the daytime. The company is producing a new model which will make correct net metering power/energy measurements.

I purchased it primarily to keep track of the energy usage on our boat. We were being charged per kWh and I suspected we were being billed incorrectly. It does not work on the boat, and I suspect that the on-board isolation transformer interferes with the data transfer. It does work at home, but that't not where I wanted to use it.
The Bottom Line:
It works fine for its intended purpose, but not for MY specific intended purpose.

Emailed manufacturer's customer service about inconsistant communication between MTU & RDU, but received no response whatsoever. Fortunately, the problem has mostly diminshed. Still there are times when packets are lost and none are received for up to 10 seconds.

Technical support was extremly POOR. After having problems with unit and software, I called several times and was told I would be called back, but NO ONE called me.

The probes were a little large, making the placement difficult due to the 2 main feeds being close within the fuse box. The device should have some memory capabilities, so that when you connect it to the Footprints Software, you can get some historical data (at least a days worth).
